Obituary of Louis V. DiGiacomo

Louis V. DiGiacomo, 88, of Gloversville, passed away after a long illness on Tuesday,  January 1, 2019, surrounded by his family. Mr. DiGiacomo was born May 8, 1930 in Gloversville, son of the late Paul and Jennie DiGiacomo.

After attending Gloversville High School, Louis was an original crew member on the Naval Aircraft Carrier USS Coral Sea CV-43, named for the Battle of the Coral Sea in World War II and commissioned on October 1, 1947. He directed airplanes as they landed on the ship.

He was a member the Church of the Holy Spirit where he served as an alter boy for Father Ottaviano when it was Mount Carmel Church. He was also a member of the Italian American Club in Albany and the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 7, where he retired from Electric Boat Nuclear Power Plant in West Milton, NY.

Louis was a kind, caring and friendly person who enjoyed family gatherings, especially with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.  He and his wife Rose were avid dancers who went out weekly with friends to dine and dance. He also liked to run and would be seen running at Park Terrace or around Melchoir Park. Louis took pride in his home and cars and attending car shows. He had a knack for building and fixing things for family and friends and was a thoughtful and helpful neighbor.

He  is survived by two daughters, Diane DiGiacomo-Purcell (Raymond Jr.) of Gloversville and Paulette DiGiacomo Mahar (Frank) of Glenville; his loving grandchildren, Sara Rose Mahar and Craig Louis Mahar; a sister, Dolores Hage of Amsterdam; two brothers, Vincent DiGiacomo (Marion) and Paul  DiGiacomo Jr. of Gloversville; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Louis was predeceased by his wife of 62-1/2 years, Rose Intelisano DiGiacomo, on October 8, 2013. They were married April 1, 1951.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the CNA's, nurses and staff at Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility for the excellent care they gave to Louis.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 4 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville, with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel as celebrant.

Interment will take place in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
