Obituary of Mary Gillis

Mary O'Shaughnessy Gillis passed away Tuesday morning, April 2, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.  Mary was born December 19, 1931, in Flushing New York, to the late John and Christine O'Shaughnessey.  In 1957, she married the late Joseph Gillis. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage together.

 

Mary graduated from Saint Agnes Academy, College Point, New York in 1949.  She worked for Consolidated Edison Company in New York, NY in her early years. Mary worked with her late husband at the family business, Dunday's Clothiers, for many years. 

 

Mary was a strong, amazing woman.  She cherished being a mother. Mary's life revolved around her family.   She loved being at camp in Caroga Lake. She enjoyed bowling with her girlfriends for many years.  She was a woman of devout Catholic faith. Mary's laughter was genuine. She certainly had a witty sense of humor.  As her family would tell her, "You are the best". She was very proud of her Irish heritage. Beautiful inside and out.

 

Mary is survived by her beloved five children: Terry Myzal (Dave), Jo-Anne Gillis (Bruce), Joseph Gillis  Jr. (Deborah), Peggy Servello (Jim) and Katie Biasini (Jason); grandchildren: Christina, Jake, Josh and Emily Myzal, EJ Gallup, Jennifer Parillo, Kelly Orlosky,  Ben, Ian, Hannah and Noah Gillis, Matt Servello, Courtney Skiff, Chelsey Cooper, Payton and Alana Biasini, Lizzie and Jacob Campione, and Erin and Eliza Ashe; 4 great grandchildren: Donovan, Julian, Wesley and Sydney; sister, Peg Johnston of Gloversville and brothers Patrick Murphy and Donald Murphy; Godson and nephew Bobby Johnston and niece Lora, and several loved nephews and nieces and their children. She was predeceased by her brother, John O'Shaughnessey and brother-in-law, Dick Johnston, and nephews Jack and Michael Johnston.

 

The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday, April 4 from 4pm until 7pm at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a Prayer Service will be held 9:15am Friday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville, with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel officiating.

 

Interment will follow at FernDale Cemetery, Johnstown.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's memory to the American Cancer Society.
