Obituary of Gabriel A. Agosta

       Mr. Gabriel A.  Agosta, of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully on Monday October 7, 2019 at the E.L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility surrounded by his family.  Gabe was loved by the entire Hospice team during his stay at Wilkinson.

       Born in Amsterdam, on March 16, 1936 to Carmen and Anna (Elwell) Agosta, He was a lifelong Amsterdam resident and he graduated from the Wilbur H. Lynch High School Class of 1955.

      After graduation Gabe played professional baseball for the Mascalucia Timerjacks in Southern Oregon and later played for the Washington Senators and the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Teams. He also played baseball for many local teams in Amsterdam and the Capital District.

      In 1958 Gabe served in the US Army 3rd Division in Wurzburg, Germany as a Quarter Master in Communications during the Vietnam War until 1960.

     He first was employed by Niagara Mohawk and later became a Barber where he worked at Carmen's Barbara Shop on the South side of Amsterdam.  He also worked as a Bartender for the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course and the former Pepe's Restaurant in Amsterdam.   Gabe last worked for the Office for the Aging in Amsterdam as a driver and in maintenance.

     Gabe was a member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Club where he enjoyed playing golf over the years. He also enjoyed going to the Saratoga Race Track during the summer. Gabe also loved watching baseball and football.

    He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Amsterdam.

      His loving family includes, his sister, Rose Andrews of Albany; his nieces, Anne Marie Murdico (Joseph) of Amsterdam, Elizabeth Traskos (Mike) of Perth, Gabrielle Marotta (Anthony) of Amsterdam; his nephews, Carmen J. Agosta (Kimberly) of Rotterdam, Frank Agosta (Shirley) of Schenectady; cousins, great nieces and great nephews also survive.

     Besides his parents he was predeceased his sister, Mary Anne Agosta; a brother, Carmen Agosta, Jr. and a nephew, John Chirico.     

     It was Gabe’s request that there be no calling hours.  A graveside service with full military honors will be held at a later date.   Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Montgomery County SPCA.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY.
