Obituary of Dwight M. Smarup

Mr. Dwight M. Smarup, 72, of Woods Hollow Road, Gloversville, NY died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 3, 2020. Born in Amsterdam, NY on August 13, 1948 he was the son of the late Martin and Beatrice Rivenburg Smarup.

 

A lifelong area resident, Dwight attended local schools. He was drafted into the Vietnam War.  He served proudly as a Marine from 1968 until 1969, and was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery.  He then went on to work for General Electric for 37 years until his retirement.  Dwight also enjoyed working for Top Notch Builders, building and remodeling homes.  He enjoyed working with wood and did many projects on weekends and after retiring.  

 

Dwight was a member of the American Legion in Broadalbin, Hales Mills Country Club and St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin.  He also enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

 

On April 11, 1970 he was united in marriage to Sandra Bedell Smarup at St. Casimir’s Church in Amsterdam.  Dwight is survived by his wife; his two twin children, Sean (Sabrina) Smarup and Wendy Lee (Eric) Lussier; six grandchildren, Kyle, Nathaniel, Collin, Isabella Rose, Olivia and Corey; one brother, Charles (Anna) Smarup; his sister-in-law, Beverly Smarup; nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

He was predeceased by his brother, Bruce Smarup.

 

A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at 11a.m. at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam with military honors.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Facial coverings and social distancing are required.  The service will also be live streamed on the BRBS face book page.  Private calling hours will take place for family and close friends.

 

Dwight courageously battled cancer for six years starting in 2014.  Many surgeries and treatments followed.  He did everything he could “Marine Strong.”  His courage kept us all strong- Our Brave Hero Forever.  It is with much love and respect we say goodbye.  His main love was his family and we will miss him greatly.
