Obituary of Nancy Wakefield

Nancy A. Bennett Wakefield, 78, died peacefully on January 12, 2021 at St. Johnsville Nursing Center. Born February 13, 1942 to C. Joseph and Anna (Roberts) Bennett of New Woodstock, NY, she attended Cazenovia Schools graduating in 1960. She earned a business degree from Rochester Business Institute in 1961. That same year, she married John Schlafer and together raised their four children until they divorced in the early 70s.

Nancy worked as a secretary in the Syracuse area before moving to the west coast in the mid-70s. She returned east in the late 80s, settling in the Capital District. She worked for Trans World in Albany, retiring in 2007.

Nancy was a long-time Avon Lady and avid crafter. She could be found selling both from her booth at any area church bazaar, flea market, or craft fair. She enjoyed music, puzzles, sweepstakes, and thrifting.

Nancy is survived by her children: Robert Schlafer and Ned Schlafer, both of DeRuyter, NY, and Tammy Schlafer and Thomas Schlafer, both of Syracuse, NY; a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Her parents, Joe and Ann, and her long-time partner Edmond Dunn predecease her.

Services will be private with interment at New Woodstock Cemetery in New Woodstock, NY in the spring.

Nancy’s family extends their gratitude to the staff at St. Johnsville Rehab and Nursing Center for the compassionate care they provided her during her years in residence. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to them at: 7 Timmerman Ave, Saint Johnsville, NY 13452.
