Obituary of Julia M. Smullen

Julia “Honey” M. (Werle) Smullen, 92, of Meco, passed into God's hands on May 4, surrounded by family and her special caregiver, Tammy Hill.

 

She was born December 14, 1928 in New York City, the daughter of George Werle and Julia (Blake) Werle. On June 28,1947, she married George Smullen of Bleecker. They settled in Meco in 1951 and were blessed with six children.

 

Honey was a substitute teacher and teachers aid in the Gloversville Enlarged School District until her retirement in 2017.  On the playground, she was known by her loving students as “Super Grandma”.  She devoted many hours teaching English and Civics to individuals seeking legal U. S. Citizenship.  As a den mother with the Boy Scouts, she volunteered her time at Woodward Lake Boy Scout summer camp. Her happy place was Mountain Lake where she spent 64 summers with family and friends.

 

Honey was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, George A. Smullen, her son Joseph Smullen, and her mother and father, George and Julia Werle. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra McCane (Daniel), Brenda Capodiferro (James), Judith Manzer (Richard) and two sons, James Smullen (Kathryn) and Jack Smullen.  Also surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Hayes, Lois Leslie, and Cynthia Dodge; seven grandsons, Patrick and Jeffrey McCane, Jay, James III and Robert Capodiferro and Zachary and Travis Smullen; and six great grandsons, Jonathan, Noah, Brandon, Jasper, Wyatt, and Raine; and four great granddaughters Grace, Evie, Meadow, Ella Bren, Ariannah and Adelyne; and two great, great grandchildren, Brinley and Mason.

 

As Honey requested, family and friends will be received at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, NY from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, May 8, 2021. Facial covering and social distancing will be required.

 

A private service will be held for immediate family only.

 

Honey generously donated her body to Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 10 Spring Street, PO Box 608, Gloversville, NY, 12078 or Kingsboro Elementary School Playground Fund, 24 West 11th Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078, Attn: Deb Ashe.
