Obituary of Bertha L. Kauffman

  Bertha Larson Kauffman, 80, of Hagaman, NY, died Saturday March 19, 2022, at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, after a short hospitalization.

Born in Amsterdam on Sept. 27, 1941, she was a daughter of the late James and Helen Madelyn Miller Larson.  Bertha attended Amsterdam schools and graduated from the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School Class of 1959.  She went on to receive her degree in Education from SUNY Oneonta State in 1963 and then her Master’s Degree in Education in 1968 from the University at Albany.                                                                       

On Sept. 21, 1963 she was married to Rev. Gerald A. Kauffman who survives. 

Bertha was employed as a Teacher for most of her career at the Ichabod Crane School for over 35 years. Her passion was the New York State literacy project.    She was on the Board of Directors of the Greenhill Cemetery Association in Amsterdam where she served for a time as Vice Chairman.    She was devoted to the United Methodist Church and was a Member of the United Methodist Church on Golf Course Rd. in Amsterdam.   In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by grandparents, John and Margaret Wilkinson Larson and John and Lana Eschler Miller, aunt and uncle Bertha Miller and Albert McKnight.   Her dear sister, Beverly Ann Knapp and her husband Gerald Knapp. 

She leaves her loving husband, Rev. Gerald A. Kauffman of Hagaman, NY.  Brother and sister-in-law’s, Stanley (Bonnie) Kauffman of Binghamton, NY, and Sue and Thomas Harrington of Herkimer, NY.   Nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. 

The family of Bertie Larson Kauffman would like to thank the Community Hospice Staff, the Doctors, Pastoral Care, and Pastor’s and friends who were as the “Angels of Love and Mercy” to “Bertie”.  Thank you and God Bless You. 

Funeral services and calling hours are private and will be held at the convenience of the family.  A Celebration of Life will be announced for the public to attend at a later date.  Private interment will be in the family plot in Hagaman Mills Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Rd.
