Obituary of Iris Torres Cupeles

Iris Torres Cupeles of Amsterdam, NY, passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY on Monday, May 30th, 2022. She was 91 years old. Iris was born on April 5th, 1931 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She was the daughter of the late Francisco Torres and Ana Maria Cupeles of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

In addition to her parents, Iris was preceded in death by her brothers, Bonifacio Torres, Carlos Torres, Victor Torres, Alfredo Torres, Fernando Torres, sisters, Leida Pagan and Florencia Aviles and daughters, Christine Martell and Rosalinda Lugo.

Iris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who was of Catholic faith and loved caring for others. Being the oldest of 12 children, she helped raise her younger siblings, the children of close friends who couldn’t care for their children, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Iris was a kind, generous and gentle soul who will be missed by many.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Felipe Martell (2010). Survivors include her brothers Americo Torres and Javier Torres both of Florida; sisters Aurora Velez and Lydia Rivera both of Puerto Rico; sons Phillip Hector Martell of Oregon and Edgar Martell of Amsterdam, NY; and daughter Ana Iris Martell of Neversink, NY. Iris was blessed with 17 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren who reside throughout the country.

Services will be held privately, at the convenience of Iris’s family.
