Obituary of Clayton Smith

Clayton "Clay" Smith, Sr., 70, of Mayfield passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2015 at Nathan Littauer Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Clay and Joanne resided in their home with their son Joe and daughter in law and their children. Born May 7, 1945 in Quakake, PA, he was a son of the late Cletus and Lovena Morrison Smith. Clay worked 22 years for the Town of Mayfield Highway Department retiring in 2008. He loved county music, especially having a great passion for the older genre county music. Clay has his own band "Clay Smith and the Fugitives" playing in many places locally. His band was most notably associated with the Robins Nest in Broadalbin where they played several shows. Clay loved his family but had a special place in his heart for his four legged daughter "Tinkerbelle", was a huge New York Yankees fan and looked forward to spending time at Sacandaga Lake on his boat. Recently Clay and his son Joe started the Bannertown Bandsaw Sawmill. Survivors include his beloved wife Joanne Smith; sons Joseph (Alicia), Clayton, Jr "Butch" (Terry), Tom, John, Rodney (Monica) and Michael Tompkins; daughters Nancy Ann Sigley (Rodney) and Marci Yager; 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many special people. Clay is predeceased by his son Todd Smith; daughter Regina Smith; brothers Murph (Mary) and Art (Monica) Smith and sister Lucille Kmetz (George). A "Farewell" Party for Clay will be held at a later date. The Smith family graciously declines flowers and kindly asks all memorial donations be made to the Mayfield Fire Department, 28 N School St, Mayfield, NY 12117 or to the Ambulance Service of Fulton County, 8 Frontage Rd, Gloversville, NY 12078.
