Obituary of Stella Mateunas

Mrs. Stella Mateunas, 93, of Hagaman, NY., passed away at River Ridge Living Center on February 18, 2018 with her loving family at her side. Born February 25, 1924 in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (GeJay) Uncher. On October 19, 1947, Stella married Edward Mateunas of Amsterdam, who predeceased her in 1989. Stella graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1942. After graduation she was employed as a secretary by General Electric Company in Schenectady. After the birth of her three children, she stayed at home to care for them. During that time, she volunteered as a room mother in her children's classrooms and was an active member of the PTA. She later returned to work at Amsterdam Printing and Litho Company, retiring in 1986. While working at the Printing Company, Stella spent Friday evenings with the girls bowling at the St. John's Club. Stella was an active and faithful member of St. Casimir's Catholic Church in Amsterdam. She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church of Hagaman. At St. Casimir's she served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of the Living Rosary Society and was very active in the Ladies Auxiliary. Stella was also a member of Club 60 of St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. Stella enjoyed entertaining and cooking for her family and friends. She frequented her cookbooks and recipes looking for new delicious desserts to bake for them. Her grandchildren, who she so loved, were introduced to many Lithuanian delicacies that she would prepare for them. Stella was known for her feisty, yet great sense of humor. Stella was a person that would readily give herself to any family member or friend in need. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. For the last seven years, Stella had resided at River Ridge Living Center in Amsterdam. She touched the hearts of many there with her friendly and positive nature. Not wanting to miss any social activities, Stella was always found in the activity room. The music and sing-along programs were especially her favorites. Stella is survived by her children, Mark Mateunas of Schenectady, Barbara Mateunas of Hagaman, and Christine (Jeff) Nadler of Burnt Hills; grandson MSgt USAF Brian (Susan) Nadler of San Antonio, Texas and one great grandchild Kayla Nadler. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward; her brothers, Eugene, Henry and Joseph Unczer; her sisters-in-law, Veronica and Bridget Mateunas. She was also predeceased by her beloved granddaughter, Jessica Nadler, in 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday February 22, 2018 at 11 am at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church 51 N. Pawling St. Hagaman NY 12086 with Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis the Celebrant. The family will receive Relatives and Friends from 10 to 11 am at the church. Interment will follow in the family plot of the St. Casimir's Cemetery. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of River Ridge for their years of care and friendship.
