Obituary of Raymond J. Spooner

Mr. Raymond J. Spooner, 85, of Florida Avenue, Amsterdam, passed away Monday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital in Amsterdam. Born in Amsterdam on March 31, 1920 he was the son of the late James and Elizabeth Belfance Spooner. He was a lifelong area resident and attended local schools. Mr. Spooner owned and operated many businesses in the Amsterdam area. He also was the site manager for many years of the Woodrow Wilson Apartments. He was most noted for being a horse trainer for 25 years, at the Saratoga Harness Race Track. Mr. Spooner was married to the former Nancy Juliano whom he married in 1937, that union lasted 62 years until her death on Memorial Day, 1999. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter Debbie Hasenfuss and a brother, Frank Spooner. He is survived by one daughter, Shirley Hasenfuss and her husband Robert of Amsterdam; two brothers Harold Spooner and his wife Betty of California and Walter Spooner and his wife Theresa of California; one grandson, Robert R. Hasenfuss and his wife Patricia of Hagaman; two great-granddaughters Renee and Amy; two great-great-grandsons, Braydon and Ashton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 8:15a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 39 St. John Street, with the Rev. Lawrence Decker as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph?s Cemetery, Ft. Johnson, New York. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7 on Wednesday at the funeral home.
