Obituary of Helen V. Magila

Helen V. Magila, 82, of Mathias Avenue, passed away Monday evening at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility. Born in Amsterdam on July 8, 1923, the daughter of Dionysis ?Denis? and Julia Dargush Yurkon. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary's Institute and the Mildred Elley Business School. Helen then began her career as an executive secretary for General Electric in Schenectady, working there for forty-two years until she retired in 1984. Following her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed many activities, especially the Horace J. Inman Center. Helen was a member of its board for a time, and was a charter member of the Inman Senior Chorus. An avid bowler, she was a member of several local leagues and also loved to play pinochle. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Casimir?s Roman Catholic Church and was a member of its Living Rosary Society. On Feb. 15, 1953 she was united in marriage to Edmund M. Magila. In addition to her beloved husband, her loving family includes her brother, Richard D. Yurkon of Latham; a niece, Catherine Yurkon of Poughkeepsie; nephews, Robert Ellen Yurkon and Thomas Katie Yurkon, all of Oswego, and Matthew Justin Yurkon of Coral Gables FL; She was the proud great-aunt to Carrie, Eric, Richard, Abigail, Conner and Courtney Yurkon. Several cousins also survive. Services are Saturday morning at 8:45 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St. Casimir?s Church, Fr. Stanley J. Swierzowski, celebrant. Interment is in St. Casimir?s Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to St. Casimir?s Memorial Fund, 260 East Main Street Amsterdam, or the Horace J. Inman Center, 53 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam NY 12010.
