Obituary of Elva A. Tierno

Elva A. Tierno, 94 formerly of Wall Street, passed away peacefully Friday morning at the Mt. Loretto Nursing Home.Born in Amsterdam on January 26, 1911, the last surviving child of James Tierno Sr. and Carolina DiBenedetto Tierno. A lifelong resident, she attended local schools and was a graduate of Oneonta State University and the Amsterdam School Of Commerce. For many years, Elva was the secretary and book keeper for the late Father Joseph C. Beck at St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church, faithfully serving until she retired in 1974. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Michael?s parish and a daily communicant of the noon mass at St. Mary?s Church.Elva was a member of the former St. Rita?s Sodality, The Secular Franciscan Order, The St. Padre Pio Prayer Group, the Holy Hour Of Devine Mercy and St. Casimir?s Living Rosary Society. Her siblings, Mary, James Jr., and Joseph Tierno all predeceased her.Dear friends, Joseph M. Isabel, Mary Constantine and Hilda Pirfo, all of Amsterdam, survive her.The con-celebrated Mass Of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 9:15am at St. Michael The Archangel Church. Interment is in St. Mary?s Cemetery, Ft. Johnson. Calling hours are Sunday from 2-5 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, where at 3pm the Chaplet Of The Devine Mercy will be recited and at 4pm the Franciscan Rosary will take place.Contributions may be made to the St. Michael?s Memorial Fund or to the Mt. Loretto Nursing Home , who lovingly cared for Elva in her illness.
