Obituary of Walter E. Gannon

Mr. Walter E. Gannon, 78, of W. Fulton St. Ext. passed away Monday afternoon at Ellis Hospital. Born in Johnstown on Feb. 23, 1927 he was the son of the late Peter and Hazel Griffin Gannon. He attended the former St. Mary?s school and Gloversville schools and was a lifelong area resident. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 137, a member of V.F.W. Post 2077 and the Knights of Columbus #265. Walter was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and was past president of the Holy Name Society. Mr. Gannon was first employed at the former MCA from 1953 to 1970. Then he went on to work for the NYS Office of General Services in Albany and the NYS Tryon School as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 1989. Survivors include his wife, Doris whom he married on June 29, 1947; three sons: Walter W. Gannon of Gloversville; Richard C. Gannon and his wife Jo Ann of Gloversville; and Roger E. Gannon and his fiancé Wendy Lyons of Caroga Lake; one daughter: Diana Wilson and her husband Burton Wilson of Johnstown; one brother: Raymond Gannon of Broadalbin; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, where a prayer service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart R. C. Church at 10 a.m. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematorium, Schenectady. Urn Burial will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family in Ferndale Cemetery in Johnstown with military honors. Memorial Contributions may be made to Mt. Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave. Ext., Gloversville.
