Obituary of John A. Young

John ?Jack? A. Young, 80, of Prospect St., Fort Johnson, passed away Monday morning at St. Mary?s Hospital after a short illness. Born on February 7, 1925 in Amsterdam, NY, the son of Albert and Anna Nolan Young, Sr., he was a lifelong area resident and attended Fort Johnson schools. Mr. Young was first employed at the Navy Depot in Scotia until going to work for the Fort Johnson School System as a custodian. He continued to work as a custodian at the elementary schools for the Grater Amsterdam School District for 32 years until his retirement in 1987. In his younger years Jack would compete as a speed skater where he would travel the Northeast and to the Lake Placid area. He also was a scout leader at one time and was an avid golfer where he started caddying at the Antlers Country Club in Amsterdam and most recently was a member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course. Mr. Young was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam. Survivors include his wife, June Curtiss Young whom he married on May 21, 1944; a son, Joseph Gerace and his wife Khadija ?Susan? of California; 2 grandchildren, Laila and Alexander Gerace; his stepmother, Ruth Miller of Fort Johnson; sister in laws, Fannie Young of Niskayuna, and Ann Young of Pennsylvania; a nephew, Michael Young and his wife Marie of Amsterdam; a niece, Joan VanPatten of Clifton Park; and several great nieces and great nephews also survive. He was predeceased by two brothers, Albert Young Jr., and Arnold Young. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Kristi Culver, Mr. Young?s great niece, officiating. The burial will take place in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
