Obituary of Everett M. Smith

Mr. Everett M. Smith, 95, formerly of Arkell Center, Canajoharie passed away Wednesday morning at The Village at Fillmore Ponds in Bennington, VT where he had been a resident for the past year and a half. Born on April 24, 1910 in Ft. Plain, NY he was the son of Fredolin and Edna Nims Smith. Everett attended local schools and was a lifelong area resident moving to Canajoharie in 1932. After school Everett went to work in 1927 as the Manager of the first self service grocery store, the Grand Union in Canajoharie until 1947. He then went to work for Beech-Nut Nutrition in agricultural purchasing for 30 years until retiring in 1974. After his retirement Everett worked part time as a purchasing consultant for 5 seasons at Beech-nut Nutrition. He was a member of the St. Johns-St. Marks Lutheran Church in Canajoharie. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Inez Dopp Smith whom he married on April 25, 1932; a daughter, Carol S. Meehan and her husband Thomas of Bennington, VT; a sister, Elizabeth Bredhal of Pennsylvania; 3 grandchildren, Deborah, Michael and William Meehan, 4 great grandchildren, Richelle, Nicholas and Katie Meehan, and Shannon Cross, and one great great grandson, Aiden Cody all of Bennington, VT; and several nieces, nephews also survive. Everett was predeceased by three brothers, Harlan, Milburn and Fredolin Smith. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie with the Rev. Gail Wolling officiating. The burial will take place in the Brown Cemetery in Canajoharie. A calling hour will precede the funeral service from 12 until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
