Amsterdam, NY?Sophie M. Battaglia, 85, life-long resident of Amsterdam, died Friday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility after being a resident for a year.
Born September 30, 1919, in Amsterdam, New York, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary D?Alessandro Sala. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Sophie worked in various glove shops in Amsterdam, was a homemaker and once a year worked the polling site at Pete?s Barber Shop on Division Street during Election Day.
She loved sewing, reading, cross stitching and helping raise her grandson.
She was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam.
On February 14, 1953, she married Salvatore J. Battaglia, who died March 26, 2004. She was also predeceased by a son, John Battaglia and a sister, Jennie Sala.
Survivors include her family; a son, Joseph Battaglia and his wife Terri, of Tewksbury, Mass.; a daughter, Judy Goldy and her husband Gerry, of Amsterdam; three brothers: Pat Sala of Clifton Park, Dan Sala of Vails Mills, and Zump Sala of Amsterdam; three grandsons, Kyle Goldy of Port Richey, Florida, and Tyler and Brett Battaglia of Tewksbury, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, N.Y. with the Rev. Pasquale Iannotti officiating. Entombment will take place in the family mausoleum in St. Michael?s Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday one hour prior from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. A Legacy Candle Ceremony will be held right before the funeral time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sophie?s memory to the, Office for the Aging for the Dial a Ride Program, 380 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, N.Y. 12010.
