Obituary of Albert L. Bayless, Jr.

Albert L. "Al" Bayless, Jr., age 86, of Johnstown, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at Wynn Hospital, Utica, NY. Al has resided at the Masonic Home in Utica since last June.

He was born December 9, 1937, in the Town of Essex, NY, to the late Albert L. Sr. and Amy (Moore) Bayless. He began school in Schenectady, NY and while in third grade his family moved to Willsboro, NY, where he graduated High School in 1956. He then found his way to Fort Knox, KY, where he served in the US Army Reserve from 1956 to 1964. Al attended the Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science and became a licensed Funeral Director. In 1963 he became employed at Walrath & Bushouer, Inc; which became Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home and is now Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Homes, where he retired from in June of 2023. Many years ago, he was a Steward at The Eccentric Club, Gloversville.

Al is a member of the Foothills Worship Center, Johnstown. A member of the Masons for 0ver 61 years, he was a member of St. Patrick's Lodge #4. and a lodge member and Past Master of the former Gloversville Lodge #429. He also belonged to Cyprus Shrine of Glenmont, NY, where he was in the Cyprus Clown Unit, and loved to participate in local parades as “Ears”.  After retirement he enjoyed playing cards as a member of the Shirley J. Luck Senior Citizens, Johnstown.

Married to Maureen J. Porteus, on October 23, 1982, he enjoyed returning to Willsboro, a place he always called home. He also enjoyed antiquing and was a Civil War enthusiast, he loved touring Gettysburg and Vicksburg.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind three daughters, Toni Lynn Giblin (Peter), Randi Lynn May of Gloversville and Kimberley Lawrence (Peter) of Canajoharie; and a son, Robert Bayless; five grandchildren, Timothy and Christopher Giblin, Jeffrey and Aubrey May and Caitlynn Lawrence. Several great grandchildren and  the mother of his two daughters, Roberta Henry, also survive.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 am to 11 am Saturday, February 3rd at Foothills Worship Center, 305 Jansen Ave; Johnstown, where a Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am.

Interment will take place in the spring at Memorial Cemetery, Willsboro, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Shriners Hospital for Children, PO Box 1525, Ranson, WV 25438.
