Obituary of Harlow S. Gardinier

Harlow S. Gardinier, 89, of Steadwell Avenue, passed away peacefully Saturday morning at St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Amsterdam on December 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Edgar and Ethel Herrick Gardinier. A graduate of Amsterdam High School Class of 1940, he lived here most of his life. Harlow was employed for a number of years as a production officer for the General Electric Company in Schenectady before he retired. During World War II, he proudly served his country as an Aviation Machinist Third Class with the US Navy. He was a member of the Sons of The United Spanish American War Veterans and the Mayfield Presbyterian Church. He was an avid gardener, and was well known for his beautiful roses that surrounded his home on Steadwell and Division Streets. On November 19, 1941, he was united in marriage to the former Beverly McHarg. That union lasted nearly sixty five years until her passing on Feb. 16, 2006. His loving family includes his daughter Judith A. and her husband Henry Gieseler of Amsterdam; grandchildren, Harleen James Laramie of Glenmont, Beverly Bruce Simek of Ballston Spa, Judi Michael Stewart Of Hagaman, and Michael Gieseler of Scotia; great grandchildren, Jimmy III, Joshua and Jessica Laramie, Krista Zach Arpey, Robert Holland Jr., Mikayla Simek, Anthony, Alex and Brendan Stewart, Eric, Alexandra and Elena Gieseler; his great-great grandchildren, Elijah and Cheyenne Arpey and Ryeanna Wilkins-Holland; brother, Floyd Gardinier of Amsterdam; sisters, Norma Murphy of Syracuse, Marge Dunlavey of Fort Hunter and Hazel Roberts of Arizona; nieces and nephews also survive. Services are Wednesday at 10:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. The Revs. Dan J. Wheeler and Bonnie Orth co-officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in his name to the Mayfield Presbyterian Church or Community Hospice of Amsterdam both in care of the funeral home office.
