Obituary of Harold D. Horton

Harold "Perp" D. Horton, 91, of Thayer Road, Amsterdam, NY, passed away at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born September 14, 1918 in Amsterdam, NY the son of Milton D. and Ida Sigerer Horton. He was a 1935 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Perp was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II, where he served as a medic at the rank of staff sergeant with the 59th Battalion, and took part in the battles and campaigns of Ardenese in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Italy. He received the Silver Service Star and five Bronze Stars. He was first employed for General Electric and later as a machinist for Life Savers, Inc. in Canajoharie for 20 years before retiring in 1982. Perp was an avid tennis player, enjoyed golf and tinkering around his home. He was a longtime member and served as a deacon and an elder at the First Reformed Church of Amsterdam until it's closing in September 2008. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Wert Horton. He is also survived by one son Larry A. Horton of Amsterdam, NY; two daughters Sherry A. Jim Lent and Janet A. DeMaria both of Amsterdam, NY; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; nephew Brian Collette of Seffner, FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Agnes Collette, niece Carol Ann Johns and nephew David Collette. A Memorial Service will be held on April 22, 2010 at 12 noon at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY, with Rev. Charles Hessalink officiating. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Manny's Corners Road, Amsterdam, NY.
