Obituary of Charles Carpenter

Charles "C.J." Carpenter, 90, of Fort Plain, New York passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, New York after a brief illness. He was born on October 22, 1932, in McKinley a hamlet of Palatine Bridge, New York to William Clark Carpenter and Bessie Maria Smith.

C.J. attended a one-room schoolhouse in his younger years then Canajoharie School before enlisting in the United States Army. He was actively enlisted for two years before joining the Reserves where he served for 36 years. He retired in 1989 as Sergeant Major. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator and later crane and shovel operator for NYSDOT. He retired in 1993.

Charles was united in marriage to Miss Patricia Luft on September 20, 1952 and remained lovingly married until her passing in 2000.

In his spare time, Charles loved to play cards (pinochle and pitch) especially with his family who meant the world to him. He also enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, and fishing.  CJ was a former bowler and actively participated in this sport for many years. He was an avid camper. He was also an active member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church.

Charles is survived by his daughter Sherry Yacobucci and her husband Dennis; son Larry Carpenter and his wife Sue; as well as his sister-in-law Nancy Carpenter and his beloved grandchildren: Christopher, Patrick, Matthew, Alex and Ashley Yacobucci, Kyle Carpenter, and Josh Dranoff. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his siblings: Ralph and David Carpenter, and Margaret Gerhartz.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 24, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Lenz & Betz Funeral Home 69 Otsego St Canajoharie, NY 13317. A Service of Remembrance will take place on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Fort Plain Reformed Church with Reverend Nancy Ryan officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Fort Plain Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
