Lawrence Quackenbush

Obituary of Lawrence James Quackenbush

Lawrence James “Buddy” Quackenbush, 76, of Albany, NY, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2023. Lawrence was born on September 1, 1947 to the late Hazlett James and Margaret (Hyatt) Quackenbush. Lawrence was a graduate of St. Mary's institute in Amsterdam, NY and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He served as an altar boy at St. Mary's Church and the Auriesville Shrine.

Lawrence earned his Bachelor's Degree in English Education in Putney, Vermont and worked with an early childhood education care center in Vermont. He had been working towards earning his Master's Degree. He was an educator, and an amazing writer, who kept a journal every day. Lawrence loved to travel, especially to Ireland, and enjoyed writing and reading a great book or two. He enjoyed attending family gatherings, holidays, and just sitting having coffee with family and friends.

Lawrence had a beautiful mind and was a free-spirited soul, referring to himself as a hippi. He touched the lives of many as a cherished oldest son, brother to seven siblings, uncle, and partner. Lawrence's amazing, vibrant, fun spirited, and good-hearted soul illuminated the paths of those fortunate enough to know him, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. His infectious enthusiasm for life, paired with a generous and caring nature, made him a huge pillar of support for his family and friends alike. His memory will continue to inspire us to embrace life as he did with the same joy, love, and beautiful soul that he so effortlessly shared with all who knew him. Lawrence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of his good nature, prankster at heart, warmth, and camaraderie will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to call him family and friend. More than anything else Buddy loved God.

Lawrence is survived by his loving family, including his partner of 29 years, Chuck Hansen; his siblings, Katherine (Michael) Quackenbush Blair of Argyle, NY, Martin A. (Linda) Quackenbush of Niskayuna, NY, Patricia (late Debra Boone) Quackenbush of Virginia, Roberta L. (late Walter) Trench of Ohio, Robert J. Quackenbush of Amsterdam, and William E. Quackenbush of York, PA; as well as by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Aside from his parents, Hazlett and Margaret, Lawrence is also preceded in passing by his brother, Daniel Patrick Quackenbush.

Special love and thanks to Mike Blair, Buddy's niece Rebecca Yi Vargas, and Chuck’s sister Lynn Woodhouse, for helping Katherine with Buddy and Chuck's care over the past several years.

Funeral services will be held privately, at the convenience of Lawrence's family.
