Obituary of Rosa Di Sandro

Rosa (Carbone) Di Sandro, 83, of Amsterdam, NY peacefully entered eternal rest on Friday December 29, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Rosa was born on September 25, 1940 in the village of Alvignanello, Province of Caserta, Italy. She was the daughter of the late Filippo and Carmella Rosaria Izzo Carbone.

On May 18, 1960, Rosa married the love of her life, Giovanni Di Sandro in Italy. Together, they had three daughters in Italy before embarking on a new life in the United States where they went on to have another daughter. They settled in Amsterdam, NY, along with their extended family, in 1969.

During her time in the United States, Rosa worked for various glove manufacturers, most notably the Amsterdam Glove Shop, as a glove maker. She then retired to begin her most fulfilling job of being a grandmother (Nonna) to her grandchildren. Rosa loved spending time with and raising her 10 grandchildren. She was an avid gardener who took great pride in her garden and shared the fruits of her labor with others. She enjoyed entertaining people at her home and loved to feed others her delicious home cooked meals. Rosa proudly carried on her Italian family traditions, particularly on the holidays, and passionately passed those traditions on to her children and grandchildren. In addition to gardening and cooking, Rosa enjoyed spending time with family and friends and always attended the various plays, music/dance recitals, graduations and special events for her grandchildren.

Rosa was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Rosa was a member of the Women’s Christian Society and St. Anthony’s Society. Rosa proudly became a citizen of the United States in 1997. She was a selfless, compassionate, and kind person who always thought of others ahead of herself.

We remember a woman whose grace, resilience, and love enriched the lives of those fortunate enough to know her. May her spirit continue to inspire and may her memory be a source of comfort to her family and friends.

Rosa is survived by her loving daughters Amalia “Molly” (James) Savoie of Amsterdam, NY, Antoinette (Olivier) Cornet of Los Angeles, CA, Maria (Richard) Somers of Perth, NY, and Angela (Shawn) Donahue of Broadalbin, NY. She is also survived by her sisters Philomena Iorio and Angelina Di Matteo and sister-in-law Antoinetta Carbone, and her 10 grandchildren, Kristina Savoie, Jaime (Philip Boibeaux) Savoie, Giovanna Savoie, Michaela Savoie, John Cornet, Juliette Cornet, Justine Cornet, Stephanie Somers, Isabella Donahue, and Lauryn Donahue.

She was predeceased by her husband, Giovanni “John”, after 34 loving years of marriage when he passed away on January 25, 1994. She is also predeceased by her brother, Giovanni Carbone, and brothers-in-law, Luigi Iorio and Richard Di Matteo.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, January 6, 2024, prior to Mass from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 39 St. John St. Amsterdam, NY.
