Obituary of Stillman C. Baldwin

Stilllman C. “Bill” Baldwin, 96, of Midline Rd, Amsterdam, NY Passed away on Friday, December 6th, 2019 with his loving wife by his side.

Born on September 10th, 1923 in Amsterdam, NY to the late Robert E. and Ella Clearwater Baldwin Sr. Stillman was educated in the Amsterdam School system, going from the former Arnold Avenue School, the Academy Street School, Theodore Roosevelt and then Wilbur H. Lynch High School. While he attended Lynch High School, he took part in sports. He enjoyed playing the clarinet in the marching band and participating in parades and concerts. In his final year at Lynch High School he went to the local music competition at Ballston Spa, NY, The State Competition at Poughkeepsie, NY and the Nationals at Albany, NY.

Stillman played Baseball with Dutch Howlan, Bob Sise and several other boys from St. Mary’s Institute. He played City League Baseball with Isabel’s Team alongside many of his friends from the West End. After leaving school he went to work for the Bigelow Sanford Co. and stayed until being drafted in the US Army on February 2nd, 1943. While serving in the Army Stillman went to Camp Upton, in Long Island, NY and Finally to Fort Bragg, NC for 13 months of training. He left Fort Bragg, going to camp Shanks N.Y Boarding the Queen Mary for overseas trip to Glasgow, Scotland, then a long train ride to Poole England. He took part in the Normandy invasion. His military decoration included the European Ribbon with Five Bronze Stars. American Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. After the war ended, he left Lehavare, France and headed home. He landed at Hampton Roads, VA going to Camp Patrick Henry, then to Camp Butner in NC where he was honorably Discharged on Oct. 25, 1945. Stillman was a Charter Member of The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, as well as the US. Army Museum at Ft. Belvoir, VA, and a lifetime member of the Battle of the Bulge Association. When he was in Germany, he had the chance to shake hands with some of the survivors of the holocaust. It was a very sad day in his life. The holocaust survivors were at the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Stillman was a longtime member of the former Trinity Reformed Church where he served as deacon, and elder, and along with his wife Linda taught Sunday School classes. He married the love of his life Linda Weidemann on April 3rd, 1965. They had 2 sons, David Alan Baldwin and Darryl Robert Baldwin. Stillman served as a superintendent for Greenhill Cemetery in Amsterdam for about 30 years before earning his retirement.

In addition to his beloved wife, Stillman is survived by his son Darryl R. Baldwin; his sister in law, Helen Baldwin; a nephew, Mark Baldwin of England; a cousin, Marilyn Kyme of East Glenville. Stillman is predeceased by his 2-year-old son, David Alan Baldwin; his parents Robert Sr. and Ella; and his brother, Robert Baldwin Jr. who served his country aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga. He was also predeceased by his in laws Henry and Marion Weidemann.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 at 4pm at Betz, Rossi, & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010, With Rev. Cynthia Leonard officiating.  The United States Army will be rendering Military Honors for Stillman's brave service to our country. A visitation will take place from 2-4pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date at Greenhill Cemetery in Amsterdam, at the discretion of the family.
