Karyl Johnson

Obituary of Karyl B. Johnson

Karyl B. Johnson, age 79 of Gloversville, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.  Born in Gloversville on November 14, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Vernice Lathrop Reed.

Karyl graduated from Mayfield Central School in 1960.  She attended SUNY Albany where she received Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in English/Education with a minor in French.  Karyl was an English teacher in the Galway Central School District for 30 years where she taught 7th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade until her retirement in June of 1996.

She was a dedicated and committed educator who believed in the potential of all of her students to succeed and strived to leave a positive impact on each and every one.  In 2018, her former student, Bryan Salisbury, honored her by dedicating his first novel, The Blacksmith, to her.

Karyl met the love of her life at the wedding of their good friends and they were married on July 9, 1966.  They built a wonderful life together centered around their daughter and their close-knit extended family. Bob and Karyl loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to Maine, Florida and up and down the east coast until his passing in 2016.

Karyl was a member of the Johnstown Senior Center and the North Main Street United Methodist Church. Writing, playing bridge, and reading were just some of the many simple pleasures that fulfilled her days. She was also an avid painter later in life and gifted many of her works to family and friends. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Karyl is survived by her daughter, Vicki Ingalls (Kenny) of Gloversville, a granddaughter, Brittanie Ingalls of Amsterdam as well as many close cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert Johnson.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2:30 pm Tuesday, April 5 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, where a Funeral Service will follow at 2:30 pm with the Rev. Joyce Royal officiating.

Karyl’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Pineview Commons in Johnstown for their kind and compassionate care.
