Obituary of Emiliano Ilagan, M.D.

Dr. Emiliano llagan passed away peacefully at home on August 1, 2023 in the presence of his loving family following a long illness. 

Born on September 11, 1930 in Alitagtag, Batangas in the Philippines, Dr. Ilagan was the second of 8 children. After graduating from Manila Central University School of Medicine, he came to America in 1957 as an intern in Fall River, MA. He later completed a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine in St. John's, New Foundland and a residency in anesthesiology at McGill University in Montreal.

Dr. Ilagan moved to Amsterdam in 1970 and began his medical practice where he served as the Chief of the Departments of Anesthesia at both St. Mary's Hospital and the former Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2006.

He was predeceased by his parents Maria and Raymundo Ilagan, brothers Primitivo, Leonitus, Roberto and Cesar Ilagan and his sister Beth Zapanta.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Laurie; sons Alan (Andrew VanWagenen) and Paul (Landrie Leone); grandchildren Noah, Emiliana and Jaxon Ilagan; brothers Leonardo (Sally) and Pablo Ilagan; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Ilagan provided an ever present sense of support and care for his family and his great love and devotion to them never wavered. As a doctor, he served his community with unfailing dedication and medical expertise, coupled with a humorous and engaging rapport with his patients.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by The Very Reverend O. Robert DeMartinis E.V. at 11a.m. on Monday, August 7, 2023 at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, 50-52 Cornell Street, Amsterdam, NY.  A calling period from 9a.m. – 10:30a.m. will be held at the church, prior to the Mass. Private burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
