Obituary of Barton D. Leneker
Mr. Barton D. Leneker, 93, of Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge, NY passed from this life on Sunday, October 22, 2023 surrounded by his family. Born on October 31, 1929 he was the only child of the late Delancey and Edna Leneker.
A lifelong area resident, Bart attended elementary school at the Palatine School and graduated from Canajoharie High School in 1947. In high school he was a talented athlete, lettering in basketball, soccer, track and baseball.
Bart proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper in the re-activated “Blue Wyverns” 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Division during the Korean War, being honorably discharged in 1953.
In 1956 he was united in marriage to Joan M. Devendorf of St. Johnsville, NY. His 39 year career as an Electrical Utility Professional, began with the Electric Light Company in Canajoharie, NY. Through merger, acquisition and consolidation, the Electric Light Company became Niagara Mohawk Power, from which he retired in 1990.
He spent 50 years of his life hiking, hunting and fishing The Adirondacks with frequent trips to the North Woods Club. He enjoyed and shared his love for the outdoors with his wife and children, and they often spent time at the family camp at Stoner Lake.
Bart will be remembered for his superior knowledge of the environment and his respect for the woods, and wildlife. He was well versed in forest, field and stream.
Whether it was service to his country, his community or his family, he was always there to counsel, help and be a guiding light. Bart was a true example of a leader and a friend and will never be forgotten.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan in 2007; and his son, Steven Thomas Leneker in 1978.
Survivors include his three devoted sons, Joel B. Leneker, Lee W. Leneker, and Daniel J. Leneker.
A Service of Remembrance will take place on Friday, November 10th, 2023 at 10a.m. at the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Homes, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Burial with military honors will follow in the Canajoharie Falls Cemetery.
