Obituary of John W. Berthiaume, Sr.

Gloversville - John W. Berthiaume passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. John left behind a legacy of courage, service, and unwavering love.

Born on June 4th, 1961 in Niskayuna, NY to proud parents of the late Fernand & Geraldine (Jordan). John graduated from Mohonasen High School. Growing up with a strong sense of duty and commitment his journey led him to the United States Marine Corps., where he was based in Camp Lejeune, NC. Lance Corporal, John Berthiaume, served as an Antitank Assault Guided Missileman, while on a military peacekeeping operation during the Lebanese Civil War. On October 23rd, 1983, two truck bombs struck buildings in Beirut, Lebanon, where he was stationed. Many Marines fell that day in the bombing of the Marine headquarters. John’s indomitable spirit and resilience were evidence in both his professional and personal life. His passing serves as a reminder of the relentless nature of cancer, but his legacy as an Honorary Marine. He received many honors and medals for his service which include but are not limited to, “the Marine Corps expeditionary medal,” “Sea service deployment ribbon,” Combat action ribbon,” and “Rifle expert ribbon.” John’s time in the Marines instilled in him values of discipline, loyalty, and selfless service that would define his character throughout his life.

John lived a beautiful life marrying his high school sweetheart, Linda. Together they built a life and family for more than 42 years. Their collaboration efforts in establishing a home and raising three children stands as a testament to their dedication and mutual support. John was a devoted father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his cherished children and grandchildren.

Throughout John’s life, he learned the art of carpentry, and specialized in woodworking. He was admired by all for this special talent. He loved working on his own home remodeling bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and completed each job with excellent workmanship. He worked methodically until the job was done, teaching anyone who was smart enough to learn and listen along the way. John would always put his family first; he would sacrifice anything to ensure they were well provided for. John loved to drive around in his red Camaro, where he could stretch his legs and enjoy a cigarette. But he drove that car – over and over – from east to west coast and in between, with the sole goal of spending countless hours with his wife – his true passion in life. In the early mornings of the spring and summer, you could find him tending to his lawn; he always made sure it was looking great and was the best in the neighborhood. He was a “gentle giant” who loved all animals, especially his dog Cooper. John will be missed by all who loved him.

John is survived by his wife Linda (Herman) Berthiaume, three children, John Berthiaume Jr. (Amanda Kaczor), Nicole Soper (Daniel), and Joshua Berthiaume; grandchildren, Samantha, Alexandria, and Grady; sisters, Linda Germain (Peter Frederick) and Sandy Guldenzopf (Dale); best friend Steve Sheldon. Many nieces and a nephew also survive.
