Obituary of Alfred H. McGuire

Alfred H. "Al" McGuire, age 94, of Gloversville, NY; died Thursday evening, February 15, 2024, at St. Johnsville Rehab & Nursing Home, St. Johnsville, NY.

He was born October 25, 1929, in Montclair, NJ; the son of William and Lucy (Lockward) McGuire. He served in the US Navy for 21 years from 1947 until 1967. He was later employed as a Veteran's Representative by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission from 1968 until 1989.

A ready volunteer, he served on the following: New Hanover County War Memorial, American Legion Medal of Honor Committee for Portraits and naming the schools that bear the names of the MOH recipients. NH Memorial Hospital Kidney Foundation and the Hospital Ethics Committee, Wilmington Board of Adjustments. NH Election Board serving as Chief Judge in Precinct 23.

Al served as Past Post Commander (1997) of American Legion Post 10. He chaired and served on many committees including Oratorical and Baseball. He was inducted into the NC American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. He chaired the 40/8 of the American Legion Cape Fear Comm. College Nurses Training Scholarship from inception in 1991 through 2009.

With great pride he was a worker at the NC Azalea Festival Variety Show for 25 years, chairing the show from 1980 until 2000.

Al organized and worked diligently for the Cape Fear Submarine Veterans.

When not needed by others, he was an avid offshore fisherman.

Al is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Frye (Tim), and three stepchildren, Patricia Payne (Gary Frasier), Stephen Blaze (Paula) and Sharon Wilcox (Tobin); as well as two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by both of his wives, Marie McGuire and Dzinta "Cindy" (Lenz) McGuire.

Interment with Military Honors took take place February 26th at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Homes, Gloversville.
