Obituary of Edna G. Smith

Edna G. Smith, 95, of Gloversville passed away peacefully on Friday morning, October 3, 2014 at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family. Born September 15, 1919 in Chelsea, VT, she was a daughter of the late Henry Flanders and Florence Webster Gates. Edna married her beloved husband of 70 years, the late Harry J. Smith, on January 9, 1944 at Camp Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. They had met while Harry was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Burlington, Vermont. She was working at that time as the secretary to the Dean of Admissions at the University of Vermont in Burlington. Edna also was a clerk at Britt's Department Store and a secretary at Baxter Insurance Agency in Johnstown. She was very active in the community as a Girl Scout leader, member of the Meco School PTA, member of the Fulton County Home Bureau, member of the St. Anthony's Bowling League, member of the Fremont Street UMC Mary Martha Circle and volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Mobile. Edna was a terrific cook and baker; loved gardening with her late husband but most of all loved her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her sons William H. Smith (Patricia) of Dallas, GA and H. Joseph Smith (Chris Verzulli) of Setauket, NY; daughters Patricia Green (Thomas) of Gloversville and Cynthia A. Frasier of Edinburg, NY and sister Ruby Pike of Northfield, VT; 10 grandchildren Tamira Sinicropi (Carmen), Lee T. Green, Jr (Brooke), Toben Green (Mary), Tracy Green, Todd Green (Andrea), Steven Smith (Tina) , Jason Smith (Lisa), Megan Milam (Brian), Chad Frasier (Christina) and Kerry McMillan (Aaron) and 13 great grandchildren. Edna is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Harry J. Smith; brother Fordyce Gates and sister Mildred Reed. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 11 A.M. at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home 51 Fremont Street Gloversville with the Rev. Dr. RW Williams officiating. A calling hour to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be held at the funeral home from 10 A.M. until time of service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda. In lieu of flowers memorial donation may be made in Edna's memory to Foothills United Methodist Church 17 Fremont Street Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the ALS Association Gift Processing Center PO Box 6051 Albert Lea, MN 56007. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Gloversville.
