Obituary of George W. Stevens

Mr. George W. Stevens, 84, of Erie Blvd, Canajoharie died peacefully on Saturday, January 26, 2013 with his family by his side. Born in Blue Hill, Maine on October 1, 1928 he was the son of the late George and Marion Bladen Stevens. George grew up in Long Island, NY and had a passion for horses. At a young age he began working and exercising horses, and was a Jockey at Belmont from 1948 until 1953. In 1966 he moved to the Mohawk Valley, where he was member of Local #157 in Schenectady. He was employed for many years as a laborer for Frank Zeronda Construction Company based in Albany. He enjoyed going to Saratoga Race Track, OTB in Amsterdam and spending time with his family. Survivors include the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Marilyn DeNoyelle Stevens; one son, Kenneth E. Stevens and Keara MacIntrye of Canajoharie; three daughters, Linda A. Stevens and Randy G. Mickle of Warnerville, Gail M. Summerfield and her husband Vinnie of Endicott, and Donna J. Gardner and her husband Rick of Earlton; 10 grandchildren, Edward G. Hohensheldt, Scott G. Sheraee Hohensheldt, Michelle L. Michael Kruglak, Kristin M. Stevens Shane Richard, Kayla M. Stevens Justin Warner, Justin A. Charity Summerfield, Garrett M. Laurie Summerfield, Kimberly A. Dean Shultis, Melinda S. Jason Lucas and Richard A. Chelsea Gardner II; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 11 o'clock at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, New York. Interment will take place at a later date in the Ames Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from 4 until 7p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, New York 12078.
