Obituary of Fred J. Ward

Fred J. Ward, age 82, of Gloversville passed away on Wednesday March 31, 2010 at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. Fred was born in Gloversville on October 1, 1927 the son of the late Eugene "Mike" and Grace Young Ward. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School and also graduated 2nd highest honors as a machinist from the Veterans Vocational School in Troy, NY that is now known as Hudson Valley Community College. On April 17, 1949, Fred married the former Josephine Romaine. They shared over 60 years united in marriage. He was employed as a measurement engineer with General Electric for 38 years. Some highlights of Fred's work with GE are working on Nuclear Submarines as well as the turbines in the Hoover Dam. During his time with GE Fred visited every state in the continental United States as well as Egypt, Japan, Taiwan, Trinidad and several other countries. After his retirement from GE, Fred was able to go to Alaska and Hawaii to complete his visit of all 50 states. Fred was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Gloversville. He was very involved with the church, serving as branch president for 14 years, as well as a scoutmaster for 1 year. He also had other various callings within the church. Fred also served as High Council on the Albany NYS Mission for 12 years. Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved golf, bowling and was a true outdoorsman at heart, but most of all he loved his family. Fred was known and loved by all. He will be truly missed. In addition to his wife Josephine, Fred is survived by his adopted son Steven Romaine of Gloversville, a brother: Harold E. Ward Lois of Honeyville, UT, and two sisters: Grace K Clute Clarence and Audrey M Mendetta Louis both of Gloversville. Additional survivors include 5 sisters-in- law: Evelyn Dutcher, Laura Dutcher, Ella Smith, Beverly Colby and Ethel Meher; 4 brothers-in-law: William Romine, Jim Romaine, Walter Romaine, John Romaine as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by two brothers George H. Ward and Frank Ward. Friends and relatives are invited and may call on Friday April 2, 2010 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; 417 Steele Avenue Extension; Gloversville. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday April 3, 2010 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
