Obituary of Emmett R. Davis

Emmett R. Davis, age 83, of Gloversville, died Monday morning, March 8, 2010 at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, following a long illness. He was born June 29, 1926 in Newark, NJ, the son of the late Philip and Alice Ryder Davis. A 1944 graduate of Gloversville High School, he later served his country honorably in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Seminole in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Emmett worked for National Cash Register Company from 1947 to 1969. He attended NCR Service Schools and Utica College. He owned and operated Davis Cash Register in Gloversville from 1969 until he retired in 2005. In his earlier years, he was instrumental in forming and also coached local Pop Warner Football. He served his community as a Gloversville City Councilman and as a Fulton County Supervisor where he also became Board Chairman. He was a member of North Main St. United Methodist Church, where he served as usher and member of the Methodist Men. He also was on many committees including the Pastoral Committee and Finance Committee. His other memberships have included: the Masonic Lodge, Concordia Club, American Legion and VFW, all in Gloversville. Emmett was married July 14, 1984 to Gloria Sutton who survives. Also surviving are three children: Carol Lynn Robbins Charles of Rutland, VT, Robert D. Davis Cathy of Boonton, NJ and Emmett P. Davis Gail of Hamilton, NY; two stepchildren: Stephanie J. Swanson Robert and Jeffrey M. Smith Mary, all of Gloversville; 7 grandchildren: Charles Robbins, Heidi Robbins, Sally Krueger, Jeffrey Davis, Emmett W. Davis, Shane Davis and Brendan Davis; 3 great-grandchildren: Bella Krueger, Caleb Krueger and Chloe Krueger; 4 step-grandchildren: Eric R. Swanson, Tiffany K. Smith, Nevin J. Smith and Alisondra Smith; 3 step-great-grandchildren: Claire E. Smith, Emma Swanson and Macy Allison. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Davis. A graveside service will take place in Section Z entrance near Wells St. and Steele Ave. on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Prospect Hill Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimers Assoc; Pine West Plaza, Bldg. 4, Suite 405; Washington Ave. Ext; Albany, NY 12205 or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.
