Obituary of Sylvia H. Steele

Mrs. Sylvia H. Steele, age 88, of Gloversville, died Tuesday morning, January 26, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville. She was born February 16, 1921 in Ephratah, the daughter of the late Lester and Mabel Shaffer Hill. She was a graduate of Johnstown High School and the former Gloversville Business School. She later worked as a talented seamstress at her home and was a bank teller at the former City National Bank in Gloversville. Sylvia was a member of Foothills United Methodist Church. She enjoyed making ceramics and was a wonderful cook. She enjoyed baking for her grandchildren and was well known for her homemade jams and pickles. At Christmas time her cookies were a delightful treat. She loved to read and instilled the importance of the love of reading to her family. She was married to Herbert W. Steele on August 26, 1944. Mr. Steele died August 21, 2006. Survivors include three children: Deborah A. Gordon Dennis of Port Clinton, OH, Sandra L. Watson Jeffrey Ferri of Gloversville and William D. Steele Sandra of Mayfield; six grandchildren: Kristin Gordon, Dean Gordon, Jason Watson, Nicholas Watson, Dustin Watson and Thomas Steele; and a great-grandson, Ethan Watson. She was predeceased by her brother, Melvin Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 29 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 or to the Alzheimer's Assoc; Pine West Plaza, Bldg. 4.
