Obituary of James Phoenix

Mr. James Phoenix, 88, of Fairmont Avenue, Amsterdam died peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady following a brief illness. Born on October 14, 1921 in Elderslee, Scotland he was the son of the late James and Mary Taggart Phoenix. James immigrated to the Unites States with his parents and settled in Amsterdam. He attended local schools and enlisted with the United States Army in 1942. It was during that time in which he met his war bride, the former Doris Lillian Dinham. They were married at All Soul's Church on July 3, 1943. In 1945, James was honorably discharged and the couple returned to Amsterdam. Mr. Phoenix then went to work for Mohasco Industries in the Public Relations Department as a writer. He relocated with the company when they moved to Georgia and retired in the mid 1990's. In 2003, James and Doris moved back to Amsterdam to be closer to their family. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Phoenix; a son, Michael Phoenix and his wife Dorothy of Amsterdam; two sisters, Ann Andrews of Hagaman and May Morton of Florida; three grandsons, Greg Phoenix of Cambridge, MA, Tim Phoenix and his wife Jennifer of Albany and Michael Phoenix of Long Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Ellen Jennings and a brother, William Phoenix. There are no calling hours or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
