Obituary of George E. Douglas

George E. Douglas, 68, of Queen Ann Road, passed away Saturday morning at the Timberlyn Heights Nursing Home in Great Barrington, MA after a long illness. He was a resident of the River Ridge Living Center for three years. He was born September 26, 1941 in Cobleskill, New York; he was the son of Nellie Rivenburgh Douglas and the late Belden Douglas. George was a graduate of the Fonda-Fultonville High School and lived most of his life in Fort Hunter. He was employed as a welder for Conrail in Fonda for 30 years. He also owned and operated for seventeen years, with his wife, G & D Enterprises furniture store, which operated on Reid Street and Main Street in Amsterdam at one time. George enjoyed going to auctions, garage sales, square dancing and was a member of several western square dancing clubs in the area. He was a lifetime member of the Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department and at one time received a 35-year plaque. He was also a member of the former Fort Hunter Canal Society. On July 29, 1967, he married the former Darlene Hand. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Barry Denise Douglas of Gloversville and Scott Heather Marrone Douglas of Gloversville; two daughters, Karen Silas of Hagaman and Laurel Douglas of Fort Hunter; his mother, Nellie Rivenburgh Douglas of Johnstown; two brothers, Floyd Tracee Douglas of Broadalbin and Kim Denise Douglas of Hudson; thirteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a family friend, Jeannette McMorris. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 11am at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, NY with the Rev. Brian Dykema officiating. Burial will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery, Fultonville. Calling hours will be held Monday evening from 5 to 7pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in George?s memory to the Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department, 351 Main Street, Fort Hunter, NY 12069.
