Obituary of Richard H. Gardinier

Richard H. "Dick" Gardinier, 77, of River Rd., Arundel, Maine, formerly a resident of Amsterdam, passed away early Tuesday morning September 29, 2009 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine following complications from a fall. Born in Amsterdam, NY on May 17, 1932, he was the son of Edgar and Ethel Herrick Gardinier. Richard was a 1950 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War serving aboard the U.S.S. Okanogan APA 220 where he received the National Defense, Korean and United Nations Service Medals. He first was employed as a manager for Stewarts in Amsterdam. He later worked for over 20 years at the Nadler Brothers Dairy in Amsterdam and was last employed at the City of Amsterdam Water Treatment Plant retiring after 10 years of service in 1996. He moved to Arundel, Maine in his retirement and has lived there since. While in Amsterdam he was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years. He was the secretary and treasurer of the Men's Commercial Bowling League. He played softball for the former Sky Harbor Lounge Softball Team and was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course and was co-founder along with his late wife Peggy of the Amsterdam Couples Golf League. Richard enjoyed being with his family, gardening and taking care of his flowers. He first married Margaret L. "Peggy" Supancic Gardinier on June 25, 1955 she passed away on August 20, 1992. He then married Nancy Ellerson Gardinier on August 17, 1996. In addition to his wife Nancy survivors include four children; Kathleen Deal Louis of Ft. Johnson, NY, Carol Iverson Bud of Kennebunk, Maine, Donald Gardinier Karen of Amsterdam, NY and Randy Gardinier Michele of Amsterdam, NY. Seven grandchildren; Amy Deal, Alison Deal, Robert Hussey, Richard Gardinier, David Gardinier, Rebecca Gardinier and Jessica Gardinier. Two brothers, Harlow Gardinier and Floyd Gardiner both of Amsterdam and, three sisters, Norma Murphy of East Syracuse, NY, Marjorie Dunlavey of Tribes Hill, NY, and Hazel Roberts of Peoria, Arizona. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Richard was predeceased by a sister Ruth Gardinier at an early age. Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 3, 2009 at 10:00A.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Rev. Bonnie Orth presiding. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Tribes Hill, NY with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday October 2nd, 2009 from 4:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
