Obituary of Leon J. Jewell

Leon J. Jewell, 67, of Eaker Road, Town of Palatine, died peacefully, Saturday, July 18, 2009 with his family by his side. Born on January 30, 1942 on Jewel Road in Canajoharie, he was the son of the late Frank and Ethel Young Jewell. A lifelong area resident, Leon was a graduate of Canajoharie High School and was employed for 16 years with the Golub Corporation, as a Truck Driver for Price Chopper. He also had his own wood business. Leon was an avid golfer, hunter and enjoyed vacationing. He was also a member of the Canajoharie Moose Lodge for some time. Above all he loved his family, and will be missed by all who knew him. Leon was predeceased by his wife, the former Donna Handsell; brothers, Milton and Frank Leonard Jewell; and sisters, Frances Ford Canup, Charlotte Mowrey and Janet "Irma" Lamphere. Survivors include his four children, Scott Jewell of Schenectady, Jeremy Heidi Jewell of Town of Palatine, Cory Melissa Jewell of St. Johnsville, NY and Arianne Mark Mancini of Palatine Bridge. NY; six grandchildren, Jessie Hicks, Jacob Jewell, Anthony Mancini, Eliza Jewell, Roman Mancini and Amber Roze Jewell; a sister, Elinor Bob Groeger of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Daniel Virginia Jewell of Marshville, NY; brothers in law, William Mowery and Donald Lamphere; many nieces, nephews, cousins and several friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 10 o'clock at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams presiding. Burial will follow in Slate Hill Cemetery in Sharon, NY. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
