Obituary of Pasqualena Piarno

Pasqualena "Lena" Piarno, 92, of East Main Street, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon at her home with her daughter at her side. Born in Amsterdam on September 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Rose Tancredi Spagnola and lived here her entire life. Educated locally, Lena first worked for Yund Kennedy and Yund , Breier's Of Amsterdam and later as a shipping clerk for Fownes Brothers until she retired. Lena will always be remembered as a kind and loving mother and grandmother. She had a very strong faith and was a devout parishioner of the former St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church. On June 23, 1940 she was united in marriage to Rudy Piarno. He predeceased her on March 16, 1990. She also lost an infant daughter Michele in 1958 and her dear grandson James Rudy Sitterly on December 23, 1994. Her brothers, Michael and Louis Spagnola also predeceased her. Her loving family includes her daughter Mary Piarno Sitterly Thomas Florey of Schenectady; grandsons; Jason Samantha , Justin Julie and Jarrod Tonya Sitterly; great grandchildren; Gabrielle, Tyler, Jacob , Joshua and James Rudy "J.R." Sitterly; brother Anthony Spagnola of Galway and nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are Saturday at 9:15 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial which will be offered at 10:00 am at Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel Church by Fr. Lawrence J. Decker. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4-7pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in her name to Montgomery Co. Office For The Aging, Community Hospice Of Amsterdam or Mt. Carmel Memorial Fund , all in care of the funeral home office. Lena's family is most grateful to Hospice for their care during these last weeks and to the Office For The Aging for their delicious meals and kindness.
