Obituary of Norma J. Jones

Norma J. Jones, 81, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, June 04, 2009 with her family at her side. She was born in Gloversville December 17, 1927, the daughter of the late Ernest and Mildred Strobeck Raymond. Earlier in life, Norma was employed at Mack's Drugs in Gloversville. She later worked at Decca Records as a secretary. She was married to Herbert Gay until his passing in 1970. She later married Chester W. Jones and enjoyed several years of marriage until his passing in 2001. Norma was a very artistic woman. She loved to do crafts and was especially proficient in ceramics. She taught ceramics classes and was the owner of a ceramics/ gift shop called Rocky Acres Ceramics located in Northville. She loved to crochet and made blankets for just about everybody. Norma was an amazing cook and also an avid Yankees fan. She was a member and former commander of the Women's D.A.V Auxiliary and a Girl Scout Leader as well. Most of all, she adored her grandchildren and her faithful companion, Flea. She is survived by two sons: Larry Gay Susan of Edmeston, NY and Thomas H. Gay of Anchorage, AK; two daughters: Sandra Hackbirth of Kempner, TX and Merry Moyer Leland of Johnstown; four step children: James Jones of Troy, Joan Delehanty Richard of Colonie, Jeanne Allen George of East Greenbush and John Jones Susanna of New Boston, NH; grandchildren: Melinda Gay Funke, Stacy Gay Reno, Thomas Leigh Gay, Holly E. Gay, Danny Smith, Jr., Aaron Smith, Melissa Thompson, Michelle Hallett, Cynthia A. Moyer, Jennifer L. Moyer, Matthew S. Moyer and many others; several great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Raymond Betty of Ocean City, MD; one sister, Marilyn Orlosky Tom of Florida; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her loving dog, Flea. In addition to her parents and two husbands, Norma was predeceased by a son, Michael Scott Gay, three grandchildren: Beth Michele Gay, Jessica Hoff and Jesse James Nabinger and a sister, Elaine Kaufman Ralph. Family and friends are invited and may call Sunday, June 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Reverend Dr. R.W. Williams presiding. Interment will be at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norma's memory to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd. Loudonville, NY 12211 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave. Gloversville, NY 12078.
