Obituary of Robert F. Elwood

Robert F. Elwood, 75, of Toureauna Road, passed away Friday evening, May 8, 2009 at his home with his family at his side. Born in Amsterdam on March 22, 1934 he was the son of the late Bernard and Caroline Older Elwood. A lifelong area resident, Robert attended local schools and began his working career on the family farm. He then along with his son ran Elwood Trucking for many years. He was also employed as a security guard, and lastly a bus driver for the Greater Amsterdam School District. He was a member of the Adirondack Fiddlers and was a caretaker for the West Glenville Cemetery for many years. Above all, he loved his family dearly and will be missed by all who knew him. His family includes his wife, the former Eunice Ropeter whom he married on September 14, 1951; one son, Robert Elwood Christine Smith of Broadalbin; three daughters, Sharon Banewicz of Amsterdam, Brenda John Schoonmaker of Austin, TX, Dale Richard Lyman of Scotia; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 10 o'clock at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Jill Farnham presiding. Interment will be private in West Glenville Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 4 until 7 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
