Obituary of Stephen J. Soulla

Stephen J. Soulla, 87, of Bradenton, Florida, a former Amsterdam resident, passed away Friday morning at the Blake Medical Center. Born in Amsterdam on October 11, 1921, the son of Fedele and Evelina Gasparini Soulla. He was a 1941 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He attended Cobleskill College and Ithaca College and was a graduate of Quinnipiac University. He was the owner of the former Soulla's Card Craft in Amsterdam. Later, he worked for Mohasco and lastly served as superintendent for the Amsterdam's Muni Golf Course until he retired. During World War II, Steve proudly served with the US Navy in Guam and Okinawa. He was a former member of the Antler's Country Club, Muny Golf Course, Columbian Social Club, Elks Lodge 101, and the American Legion Post 24 in Bradenton. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam and Our Lady Queen Of Martyrs Church in Bradenton. He was predeceased by a brother Vincent Soulla, and sisters, Theresa Altieri, Alva DeLuca, Rose Mucilli and Gilda Senzio. He leaves his wife, the former Raphaela Gambardella ; sisters, Rita Squeglia of Gloversville and Margaret Phillips of Johnstown; and nieces and nephews and cousins. A Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church, East Main Street by Father John Medwid at 9:15 am on Saturday, March 28th. Interment will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Shrine Of North American Martyrs in care of Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, to whom his family has entrusted his arrangements.
