Alan McLain

Obituary of Alan H. McLain

Mr. Alan H. "Herbie" McLain, Sr; 59, of Mayfield, NY entered into that glorious Golf Course in the sky on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at his home after a long illness. He was born May 22, 1949 in Gloversville, the son of the late Darrel and Bertha Sprung McLain. He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, the former Patricia A. Jackson; a son, Alan H. McLain, Jr; a daughter, Katie J. McLain and his pride and joy, his grandson Jackson Donald "Jackie Boy" McLain. He is also survived by a brother, James McLain of Viginia; Aunt Margaret Manikewitz, several nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Herb was a graduate of Mayfield High School. Until the time of his death he held the position of Mayfield Town Supervisor and in that position he was responsible for the following committees: Chairman of Social Services Committee for 2008, Great Sacandaga Lake Advisory Committee, Buildings and Grounds, Economic Development and Social Services. He is a member of the Mayfield United Methodist Church. Among Herb's many accomplishments, he was most proud of founding the Mayfield Youth Baseball League and serving as its President and coaching in the league. He also coached the Mayfield Babe Ruth Baseball team. He was a former member of the Mayfield Fire Department, serving in several capacities including President, Treasurer and Captain of the Fire Police. He also served on the Mayfield Board of Education for six years, holding the office of President for three of the six years. He was a former Cub Master of Mayfield Pack 53 and former member of Troop 53 Mayfield Boy Scouts of America. The above accomplishments could not possibly compare to the precious time spent with Dad on camping trips at Lake Ontario, or the time Grandpa spent watching monster trucks with Jack while sharing a piece of bologna or watching Herb act more like a kid than Jack while trying to find a new hiding place every week just so he could hear Jack yell "Where are you grandpa?", which just melted his heart and mine. It is memories such as these that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Mayfield United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with the Reverend Jerry Oliver officiating. Cremation took place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Mayfield Fire Dept., P.O. Box 722, Mayfield, NY 12117. Arrangements have been entrusted to Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville. Please visit the family's online guest book at www.brbsfuneral.com.
