Obituary of Benjamin E. Gogis

Town of Florida Benjamin E. Gogis, 88, of Pattersonville Road passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam. He was born in Cosmopolis, WA April 4, 1920 a son of the late Michael and Anna Elekaitis Gogis. Benjamin was a life resident of the area and attended school at Millers Corners School, a one room schoolhouse in the Town of Florida. He grew up on his family's farm which was located on Gogus Road and worked on the farm until the age of 21. Benjamin then worked for Nadler Bros. Dairy, Mohasco Industries, and for General Electric Company in Schenectady, before retiring in 1985. He was of Roman Catholic faith and was a parishioner of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry and spending time with family and friends. His loving family includes his wife of over 52 years, Gladys Herrick Gogis of Pattersonville, whom he married July 1, 1956, his daughters, Rebecca David Shanley of Amsterdam, and Cynthia James Brockman of Gansevoort, his sons, Michael Suanne Gogis of Pattersonville, and Peter Vicki Gogis of Pattersonville, and his grandchildren, Shaun Shafer, Amanda, Matthew, Erika and Krista Gogis, and Emily and Sarah Brockman. Three generations of nieces and nephews and several cousins also survive. In addition to his parents, Benjamin was predeceased by an infant brother, Kastantas Gogis and three sisters, Mary Clarke, Veronica Rogers and Della Pisarski. Prayer services will be at 8:30AM on Monday, February 2, 2009 at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY with a Funeral Mass to follow at 9:30AM at St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam with Fr. David Mickiewicz as celebrant. Interment will be at a later date in Woestina Cemetery in Rotterdam Junction. The family will receive relatives and friends Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:00PM at the funeral home.
