Obituary of Elsie V. Jennings

Mrs. Elsie V. Steele Jennings 87, of Broadalbin, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday evening, September 2nd. She was born October 8, 1920 in Broadalbin to James E. and Nellie L. Osgood Steele. Elsie was a lifelong area resident of Broadalbin and a graduate of the former Broadalbin Central High School, Class of 1938. Elsie was a lifetime member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church where she served in the choir and as Church Clerk for 45 years. She was a former Deaconess, Sunday school and Church Financial Secretary. During her lifetime Elsie was a bookkeeper at the former A.C. Benedict Lumber Co. She was also a homemaker and a bus driver for 20 years for the former Broadalbin School District. She was deputy/Village clerk of the Village of Broadalbin from 1947 - 1987. She was a charter member of the Broadalbin Historical Society and a member of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Elsie was married on June 15, 1940 to Sprague L. Jennings and was married for 62 years until his death 6 years ago. She was also pre-deceased by a son, Robert, in September 2005. Survivors include her four children, Faith of Santa Fe, New Mexico, William Candyce of Broadalbin, Thomas of Palatine Bridge and Sally of Broadalbin. She also has five grandchildren, Jim, Jeff, Beth, Jason and Jon, and six great-grandchildren. Elsie was also pre-deceased by six brothers, and three sisters. Calling hours will be held at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin on Friday, September 5th from 5:00-8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at the Broadalbin Baptist Church Sanctuary on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 am, followed by burial at the Broadalbin/Mayfield cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corp., P.O. Box 23, Broadalbin, NY 12025.
