Obituary of James G. Phillips

Mr. James G. Phillips, 65 years old of Co. Hwy 107, died Thursday at his home. Mr. Phillips was born March 13, 1943 in Amsterdam, a son of Jay and Dorothy Brown Phillips, and was a life long resident of Perth. He graduated from the former Perth Central School in 1960. Mr. Phillips entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico for most of his military service. He then accepted a position with General Electric Co. in Schenectady where he completed an apprenticeship program and a management training program. Mr. Phillips was a foreman with the Large Steam Turbine Generator Department retiring after 37 years. Mr. Phillips was a member of Kennyetto Lodge No. 599 for 42 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and his trips to the ocean. He also enjoyed carpentry and wood working. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, the former Carol Miller, whom he married April 11, 2008, his son James J. Eden Phillips of Colorado, his daughter Rebecca Daniel Gregory of Amsterdam, the mother of his children Frances T. Phillips, his brother-in-law Frank Van Evera, his grandchildren Lexi and Ian Gregory, 2 step-sons; Carl Ovitt, Jr. of Johnstown and Chad Ovitt of Oaklahoma, a step-daughter Christen Hoffman of Ft. Plain, 11 step-grandchildren, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Diane VanEvera. Funeral services will be held 6:00pm Monday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with The Rev. Bonnie T. Orth officiating. Cremation will follow at Vale Crematorium. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday evening from 4:00 until 6:00pm at the funeral home.
