Obituary of Catherine C. Matt

Catherine C. Matt, residing at Arkell Hall in Canajoharie, NY died peacefully on April 10th, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. Mrs. Matt was a longtime resident of Canajoharie and Fishers Landing, NY. Catherine, 93, was born in Syracuse, NY on November 9, 1914 the daughter of the late Samuel and Emma Crandall. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School and later in life from St. Mary's School of Nursing. Mrs. Matt and her husband owned and operated Crandall's Restaurant in Canajoharie. Catherine was active in civic affairs and was President of the Parent Teacher Association. She was employed as a confidential secretary by Canajoharie Central School and also worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Arkell Hall. Catherine was a self styled poet and published a book of poetry entitled, Renascence. She also taught ceramics as a volunteer at the Clayton Senior Center. Mrs. Matt also enjoyed spending her winters at St. Augustine Beach in Florida and her summers at the Thousand Islands. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband, Alden Matt in 1984 and a grandson, Samuel Matt Jr. in 2006. Her loving family includes her two sons, David Matt of Fort Plain, NY, Samuel Matt of Fishers Landing, NY and a daughter, Mary Brownell and her husband John of Altamont, NY. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Constance Callahan and her husband Jay of Hilliard, FL; Christopher Matt and his wife Betsy of Baldwinsville, NY; Heidi Matt of North Greenbush, NY; Meredith Matt of New York City; and Julie Brownell of Albany, NY. Great grandchildren include, Owen and Gwendolen Matt of Baldwinsville, NY. A prayer service will be conducted on Monday, April 14, 2008 at 9 o'clock at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o'clock at St. Peter's & Paul's Roman Catholic Church. Rev. William J. Gaffigan will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 3 until 5 Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Clayton Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
