Obituary of Jose Homs

Jose "Pepe" Homs, 72, of Academy Street, Passed away at his home. Gone to Heaven with Angels, with his dog Angel by his side. Born October 15, 1935 in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico. He was the son of the late Ventura and Segunda Vazquez Homs. He attended schools in Puerto Rico and moved to Amsterdam in 1950. Jose was employed as a crane operator for General Electric Co. of Schenectady for 32 years until retiring in 2000. At one time he owned and operated the Homs Tavern on East Main Street and he also cooked at various restaurants in the area. Jose loved to cook and taught his wife Barbara his secrets, loved gambling in Atlantic City, deep sea fishing in Gloucester, "Watching the amazing Mets" and he was a former member of the Spanish American club. He was predeceased by a brother Evilo Homs. On November 11, 1989 he married the former Barbara Stuart. Besides his dear wife he is survived by his loving children, Christie Davis and fiancé Tim Bell, Edward VanAlstyne, very special "adopted" son Melvin Rodriguez, Jose Homs Jr., Ivan Homs, Nancy Alverez, Mabel Homs and Nilda Faught; special grandchildren, Destinee Robinson and James Davis "They were Grandpa's Angels" also nine other grandchildren; four sisters, Lula Homs of Florida, Gina Homs and Ester Homs both of New York City and Nery Homs of Puerto Rico; four brothers, Lichie Homs, Carlos Homs, Raul Homs and Hector Homs all of Puerto Rico; "very special" nieces and nephews in New York, Florida and Puerto Rico. Funeral services will be held Monday evening at 6pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam with the Rev. Pascal Iannotti officiating. Cremation will take place at the Vale Crematory on Tuesday. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 6 pm at the funeral home.
