Obituary of Ruth J. Schmidtmann

Ruth J. Schmidtmann, 85, of Snooks Corners Road passed away Sunday March 16, 2008 at E. L. Wilkinson, RHCF, in Amsterdam with her loving husband by her side. She was born in Ft. Plain December 9, 1922 a daughter of the late Jeremiah and Beula White Saltsman. Ruth was a lifelong resident of the area, having been raised in Ft. Plain. She married Edward W. Schmidtmann on December 15, 1945 and together they settled and made their home in Amsterdam for over 60 years. Ruth attended SUNY Oneonta and worked at Beech-Nut in Canajoharie during her time off from college in the WWII era. Upon her graduation in 1945, Ruth began her teaching career with the Dolgeville School District for a short time before returning to Amsterdam to teach. She taught at Snooks Corners Road School until it closed its doors several years ago. She then went to the Techlar Schools in Amsterdam where she taught until her retirement in 1975. In addition to teaching, Ruth was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America, continuing to demonstrate her love for children. Ruth's family includes her husband of 62 years, Edward W. Schmidtmann of Amsterdam, one son, Larry Nancy Schmidtmann of Norfolk, VA, one brother, Myron Saltsman of Ft. Plain, three grandsons, Eddie, Scott and David Schmidtmann, and one great-grandson, Hunter Schmidtmann. In addition to her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her daughter, Linda Schmidtmann in 1971. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the United Presbyterian Church, Church Street, Amsterdam with Rev. Roland "Mac" McDonald, presiding. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam. The family will receive relatives and friends, prior to the services Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. Contributions in Ruth's memory may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
