Obituary of Irene W. Towne

Irene W. Towne, 79, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Albany Medical Center. She was born March 11, 1928 in Amsterdam, the daughter of William and Anna Sadie Sikorski Knapik. Irene worked as a support investigator for the Fulton County Department of Social Services until her retirement in 1991. She loved baking and cooking, that was her specialty! She also enjoyed reading, traveling and going to the ballet at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Most of all, Irene loved spending time with her nine children and several grandchildren. They were the most important thing to her and brought her great joy. She was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church in Gloversville. Irene was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Towne, Sr. who passed away October 10, 2006 and whom she married on July 7, 1946. She is survived by six sons: William Christina Towne of Brooklyn, Daniel Margaret Towne, Sr. of Mayfield, Richard Lori Towne, Jr. of Gloversville, Mark Towne of Schoharie, Eric Bonnie Towne of Johnstown and David Towne of Gloversville; three daughters: Susan Dorman of Gloversville, Dawn Reich of Alabama and Linda Insognia of Gloversville, one sister: Carol Green of St. Johnsville, twenty grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited and may call Friday, February 15 from 4-8 p.m. at the Walrath and Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Gloversville with the Very Reverend Donald Czelusniak as celebrant. Burial will take place in the spring in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene's memory to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
